The worldwide demand of energy has been increasing considerably. Up to 2030, it is supposed to be 60% higher than today (B. SCHMITZ, 2013). Currently, non-renewable energy sources, like coal and oil, are more commonly used, since they are cheaper than renewable energies. In the European Union, 80% of the energy consumption demands are covered by fossil sources (B. SCHMITZ, 2013). But, non-renewable energy sources are running out and they are also very harmful for the environment, since they generate greenhouse gases. So, it is very important to discover more renewable ways to generate energy. For a very long time, the only energy source that mankind had was the human muscle. After that they discovered the fire and the animal domestication providing them a source of heat and help from horses to plough their fields. The only other accessible sources of energy that they could explore were wind and water. Sails were used on ships allowing people to move across water, windmills and water-wheels were used to grind grains and pump water.
